Not Just Deep Dish: Chicago’s Best Places to Eat 2025

Chicago is a food city — we all know that. But as a local, I promise you it’s so much more than deep dish and hot dogs (though I have love for those too). From vibey wine bars and cozy neighborhood staples to late-night ramen and next-level tacos, this city seriously delivers!

These are my favorite spots in not particular order— the ones I keep going back to, where I bring out-of-town friends, and where I go when I want to treat myself after a long week (or order weekly takeout from…lol). The ones that locals like to gatekeep for ourselves… These are my favorite spots — some hidden gems, some well-known classics (because hey, they’re popular for a reason). If you’re looking to eat well in Chicago, this list won’t steer you wrong.

Stunning night view of Chicago skyline highlighting illuminated skyscrapers across the water.

The list

1. Breakfast House – West town

This is one of those spots that locals gatekeep (but I won’t). It’s not flashy, but the food is consistently amazing, the portions are solid, and you’ll leave full and happy every time. It has that cozy, family run, low-key vibe that just hits on a Saturday or Sunday morning. My absolute go to spot for breakfast!

What to order: Chilaquiles are my FAV! Diegos Chicken sandwich, and any of their pancakes or French toast
Pro tip: It’s BYOB, so bring a bottle of bubbles for impromptu mimosas. And go early — it fills up quick, especially on weekends but the wait is usually no more than 30 minutes.

2. Au Cheval / Small Cheval – West Loop/Multiple Locations

Yes, the hype is real — this burger is absolutely worth it. Au Cheval is the sit-down, wait-forever, indulgent version. Expect to wait a minimum of 1-2 hours on a busy Saturday. Small Cheval is the casual, grab-and-go sibling with the same buttery, griddled magic. Either way, you’re winning.

What to order: Cheeseburger (add egg + bacon if you’re at Au Cheval), fries, root beer float, prickleback shot if you’re feeling wild. Small Cheval: A burger your way and a milkshake.

Pro tip: If you want to wait for Au Cheval get there at 5pm or earlier. If you want a later spot, go in put your name down and go to a local west loop bar (lone wolf, la joise, bar Sienna, to name a couple) while you wait.

3. Parlor Pizza – west loop/wicker park/river north

Parlor is my go-to when I want a lively spot that checks all the boxes: great pizza, fun atmosphere, and solid drinks. Whether I’m catching up with friends on the patio or enjoying a casual dinner, even takeout, it never disappoints.

What to order: You really can’t go wrong with any of the pizzas. However, there is a “Rustic Chicken Pita” that I have truly fallen in love with. I also love this place for Gluten Free pizza!

Pro tip: Each location has its own vibe—West Loop is perfect for rooftop hangs, Wicker Park boasts a dog-friendly patio, and River North features a dessert window called “Dessert Dealer” for a sweet finish.

4. Aba – West loop

Aba brings Mediterranean vibes with a California twist, offering a lush rooftop setting that’s perfect for both brunch and dinner. The ambiance is elevated yet relaxed, making it a favorite for both locals and visitors.

What to order: Smoky Garlic Hummus, Muhammara, Shawarma-Spiced Skirt Steak, and the Creme Brulee Pie for dessert… you really can’t go wrong with anything on the menu.

Pro tip: I highly recommend making reservations especially for rooftop seating during peak hours.

Aba: The interior of this place is also fab!

5. Marios Italian Ice – Tri Taylor

A Chicago summer isn’t complete without a visit to Mario’s. This family-run stand has been serving up refreshing Italian ice to generations of locals and visitors alike. I have been coming to Mario’s since I was a kid and it definitely brings a nostalgic feel and memories for me. I look forward to opening day every year!

What to order: Another place where anything you order can’t go wrong. My personal favorite is watermelon & Pina colada mix sometimes cantaloupe. My boyfriend loves the chocolate which is super unique to Marios.

Pro tip: Mario’s typically opens on May 1st (depending on the unpredictable Chicago weather) and operates through the summer till around Labor Day (again depending on the unpredictable Chicago weather). Lines can be long during peak hours but the line moves quickly and it is 100% worth the wait

6. La Scarola – River West

This place feels like a warm hug from your Italian grandma — if your grandma cooked for half of Chicago and had photos with every celebrity ever on the wall. It’s old-school in the best way, with big portions, loud tables, and food that always hits.

What to order: Calamari, Penne alla vodka, sausage & peppers, the massive veal chop, chicken vesuvio, and tiramisu for desert hits every time.

Pro tip: Call ahead — they don’t do online reservations, and it always books up weeks in advance! Also if you live near and want to do a pick up order… you can do that too right when they open before the busy dinner rush!

La Scarola: Low quality photo… HIGH quality food. The Chicken Vesuvio is my fav

7. Bavettes – river north

Bavette’s is where classic steakhouse tradition meets speakeasy cool. The dim lighting, vintage decor, and jazz soundtrack set the mood for an unforgettable meal for any occasion. The only downside to this place is… good luck getting a reservation!

What to order: Start with the peppered bacon appetizer, then go for the bone-in ribeye or the short rib stroganoff. Pair it with their truffle mac & cheese and a classic Old Fashioned.

Pro tip: Reservations open 21 days in advance at 9 AM and fill up fast. If you can’t snag a table, the bar area is first-come, first-served and offers the full menu. Good luck!

8. Aberdeen Tap – west loop/river west

Tucked away at the corner of Aberdeen and Hubbard, Aberdeen Tap is one of those low-key bars that always delivers — great burgers, a solid beer list, and a chill patio that hits especially well in the summer. It’s the kind of place you go when you don’t want a scene, just good food and easy vibes. I also love to get take out from here, so good!

What to order: I love everything I have tried from Aberdeen. My favs are the chicken wrap, shrimp tacos, steak sandwich and the sweet potato tots.

Pro tip: The kitchen is open until 11:45 PM, making it a great spot for late-night bites.

9. Noble Thai – wEST tOWN

One of my favorite neighborhood spots when I want Thai that’s full of flavor but doesn’t feel overly heavy. It’s quick, fresh, and way underrated. Noble Thai offers a fresh take on traditional Thai dishes in a sleek, contemporary setting. Although I absolutely order take out here from often lol

What to order: The Tiger Cry beef is a must-try, and one of my fav things on the menu. I also really enjoy the egg rolls, fried rice, all delicious.

Pro tip: Noble Thai offers a happy hour Monday and Wednesday through Friday from 4:00pm to 6:00pm, featuring $4–$5 draft beers and 30% off bottles of wine. It’s a great time to sample their offerings at a discount.

10. Doma Cafe – near Northside

I recently discovered this one and UGH I could eat the breakfast sando every single day. Its a Croatian inspired kitchen that has so many good items on the menu like their ćevapi sandwich, served with clotted cream and roasted pepper spread, is a must-try.

What to order: Obviously gotta get the breakfast sandwich. I get it with sausage and avocado .. soooo good! Also the gluten free hash brown to go along with it. When dining in I also love the pastries, super fresh.

Pro tip: I wouldn’t necessarily do a pick up order here. We ordered pick up and they were so slammed they quite literally didn’t even get our pick up order (through DoorDash) you’re better off sitting and dining in or ubereats and make your driver wait lol.

11. Publican Quality bREAD – west town

If you know, you know. Publican Bread is that girl when it comes to carbs in Chicago. Everything is baked to perfection — crunchy, chewy, rustic, and just a little bougie in the best way. Their sandwiches go crazy (the Big Sandwich lives in my head rent free), and don’t even get me started on the sourdough. Worth the hype. Worth the carbs. Always.

What to order: Obvs any of the sourdough breads (I like the regular and olive). Getting a pastry is also a must, I love the muffins and croissants.

Pro tip: If you want fresh sourdough, get here early! They actually don’t start selling certain menu items (like the sourdough) until about 10am and it sells out quick, expect a line out the door always. But don’t let it discourage you, it goes by fast.

12. Pizzeria Portofino – river north

If you are looking for the perfect summer time chi lunch or dinner, you have to come to Pizzeria Portofino. You will have beautiful views of the Chicago River and the food is outstanding, 100% recommend.

What to order: Per the name of the restaurant, you cannot go wrong with any of the pizzas here. However, they do have some really nice entrees like the vodka pasta, chicken and branzino. You can’t go wrong here.

Pro tip: Make reservations obviously, but you can pay a small fee to get perfect views of the Chicago River.

13. Armitage Ale House – Lincoln Park

This place gives vintage London pub meets Gold Coast glam. Think cozy leather booths, fireplace vibes, and a menu that’s somehow both comfort food and elevated. The masala chicken, the pot pie, the drinks!? Unreal.

What to order: EVERYTHING. Lol The menu is a shareable menu so order at least 2-4 dishes to share. We loved the tikka masala, oxtail potpie, mango and paneer salad, and a shrimp cocktail. Oh and don’t forget the dessert, sticky date cake …. *mouth watering*

Pro Tip: Okay so getting a reservation here is an absolute nightmare. We tried for about a month to get a Friday or Saturday reservation. Reservations drop at 9am, 14 days before you want the reservation. Like I said, may the force be with you … it’s hard!! You can also try your luck on a walk in or going during the week when it’s less busy.

Armitage Alehouse: The oxtail potpie… you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu

14. Chez Joel – Tri Taylor

Chez Joël is that cozy French bistro you stumble upon and instantly fall in love with. Tucked away on Taylor Street (near Marios that I mentioned earlier on this list), it offers a warm, intimate atmosphere with vintage posters and white tablecloths that set the mood just right. Absolutely a Chicago gem that is not talked about enough.

What to order: Start with the French onion soup — it’s a classic done right. The duck à l’orange is a standout, offering rich flavors that linger. And if you’re in the mood for something hearty, the coq au vin won’t disappoint.

Pro tip: Their garden patio is a hidden gem during warmer months — perfect for a romantic dinner or a quiet evening with friends. Reservations are recommended, especially on weekends.

15. Trivoli Tavern – west loop

Hidden down a cobblestone alley in West Loop, Trivoli is the move when you’re trying to impress. It’s giving vintage supper club — moody lighting, cozy booths, and a menu that’s rich and extra in the best way. Get the vodka rigatoni, thank me later. Oh, and the Butterfinger pie? Add it to the tab.

What to order: My favs are the sliders (also on the happy hour menu), branzino, the crispy shrimp sushi (kinda weird addition to the menu I know but so good!), and my favorite cocktail in the whole city a vodka gimlet up.

Pro Tip: Another restaurant in Chicago where it is very difficult to make a reservation. My advice, is to there as soon as they open at 4pm if you don’t have a reservation. They have a great happy hour menu so its worth it to get there that early any way 🙂

From a local, with love <3

No matter what vibe you’re chasing — a cozy neighborhood spot, a buzzy rooftop, or a classic deep-dish experience — Chicago’s food scene never misses. These are just a few of my go-to places, but honestly, you could spend a lifetime eating your way through Chicago and still find new favorites. If you’re planning a visit (or you’re a local looking to switch it up), I hope this list gives you a few ideas to start with. And if you try any of these spots, tag me — I love seeing what you order!
