Tinos Greece: The Island That Surprised Me Most

Before you book your next trip to Santorini, let me tell you how to spend 3 days in Tinos Greece. I almost ruled this island out of my latest Greece trip and I am so glad I made it here! It is pure, authentic, traditional greek island. It hasn’t seen massive tourism like the other Cycladic islands so you will get that authentic island vibe. 3 days is the perfect amount of time to spend in Tinos, exploring the charming villages, eating the best food and chilling at the cutest beaches. Here is a breakdown of my 3 day itinerary, look no further I got you covered!

Tinos at a glance

Best Time To VisitMay & September if you want less crowds
June – August if you want the best weather
Getting ThereTinos does not have an airport but good news! It’s one of the closest islands to Athens being only ~2 hour ferry ride away.
Where to StayOdera Hotel… enough said. One of the best hotels I’ve stayed at in Greece and best value for your hard earned money.
Ideal ForTinos is perfect for Couples / Solo / Groups. I think families would also love this island as there are so many villages and beaches to explore.

My favorite beach in Tinos: Kolymbithres

Day 1: Arrival

Depending what time of day you get into Tinos, you can take it easy day 1 or try to pack in some fun places. We actually stayed at 2 different hotels for our 3 days in Tinos (Odera was bought out the first night we were in town) Tinos resort was a cute family run hotel close to Tinos Town. But the star of the show was Odera Hotel. The property is stunning, the rooms were big, and the breakfast was great. The price was honestly not bad for a luxury hotel, I couldn’t recommend Odera enough.

Places to Go

If you decide to go out and about on day 1, these are the places I recommend visiting:

  • Tinos Town: You absolutely have to walk through Tinos Town. It is the largest and main village in Tinos. So many shops, candy stores, restaurants. We had a great breakfast at Mikro, highly recommend.
  • Panagia Evangelistria: While you are in Tinos Town, stop by this Greek orthodox church. It has great culture and religious significance in Greece where those come and go by hands and knees up the street to the church. It is believed to be the place of many miracles, worth visiting.
  • Kardiani: Take a drive to Kardiani and take in the beautiful mountain views, greenery and if time allows visit the Orthodox Church of Agia Triada and the Catholic Church of Panagia Kioura.

Dinner recommendation: To Perivoli Tis Kardianis is the perfect dinner spot for night 1. The most beautiful setting and Aegean sea views. Make reservations in advance if you want a prime spot with sea views. Also this restaurant was tricky to find and parking is limited, be on alert.

Day 2: Village hopping & Beaches

As expected, we are packing in a ton on Day 2! This is where a set of wheels is definitely going to come in clutch! A car is highly recommended for getting around Tinos. Many of these villages are 30-45 minutes apart so a set of wheels will definitely be useful!

Places to Go

  • Pyrgos Village: One of the larger villages in Tinos. Great shopping here, cafes, and of course beautiful marble streets.
  • Volax village: The cutest little village in Tinos. My favorite part were the different verses of famous Greek poetry and song lyrics handwritten on wooden doors, shutters, and stone walls. Such a unique experience, loved walking through here in the early afternoon.
  • Kolymbithres Beach: If you’ve done any research on Tinos so far this is one of the most popular beaches on the island. Easily identifiable by the CUTE mushroom umbrellas. The umbrellas do have a fee of about 20 euros and some larger sun beds for 30 euro + completely worth it.

Dinner recommendation: Serviam was such a great dinner. It’s set in an old monastery and the location is quaint and beautiful. We had a 500g steak.. which was HUGE but so good.

Day 3: hotel chill or more beaches

If you’re lucky enough to have a 3rd day in Tinos, I would recommend checking out more beaches, more villages and or hanging out at the fabulous Odera Hotel which is what we did. I seriously did not want to leave!

Places to Go

  • Panoramos: A small fishing village just north of Pygros (if it makes more sense to add to do day 2 do it!). Cute shore front tavernas and great place to grab some lunch.
  • Rochari Beach: Close to Panoramos, you have Rochari beach. Another great option if you’re looking to explore more of Tinos.
  • Agios Fokas beach: the longest beach in Tinos. This is a great option for lots of sun beds and chairs check out Elina for good food and sun beds.

Dinner Recommendation: On our last day we went to O Ntinos. I recommend coming here for sunset and getting a table after 7:30pm so you can get prime seating by the water. The complimentary fish soup was actually one of my favorite things we had.

Practical Tips for tinos

Getting Around

  • Car: A car is an absolute must for Tinos. The villages are spread 30-40 minutes apart and you will definitely get the most out of your time with a car.
  • Ferry: You will likely get to Paros via ferry which is located in Parikia.
  • Boat: Boat day mentioned above, absolute MUST DO
  • Taxi: Taxis were readily available in Paros, easy way to get around.

Where to Eat (My recommended to least)

  • To Perivoli Tis Kardianis: LOVED our dinner here. The fried zucchini balls and prawns were my favorite thing. Great place for sunset views as well.
  • Serviam: The location of this place was so unique and maybe my favorite on the trip (although it’s really hard to pick a favorite, all these places are fab!). The mushroom pie and gigantic steak were the highlights (seriously share the steak with someone, it’s huge.. we ordered 2 and it was a sight to see).
  • Mira Restaurant: A stylish beachfront restaurant in Parikia known for elevated Mediterranean and Greek cuisine, romantic sunset dinners, and a more upscale atmosphere with beautiful sea views. Ideal for a nicer dinner night in Paros.
  • O Ntinos: If you like seafood this is your place! We did a lot of sharables to try everything. Honestly my favorite part of the meal was the complimentary fish soup, it was so good!
  • To Thalassaki: A place we will definitely try next time. Located right on the water with what looks to be amazing seafood!

Tinos vs Mykonos

If you’re trying to decide between Tinos and Mykonos (DO BOTH is my first suggestion), but can only do both, here are a few points that will hopefully help you decide. They are only a 30 minute ferry ride from each other so if you can’t do both, you certainly can day trip to one or the other.

Tinos

  • You definitely need a car to get around Tinos
  • Not as many “luxury” accommodations
  • Noticeably cheaper than Mykonos
  • Authentic feeling with cultural and religious significance

Mykonos

  • Renting a car is not 100% necessary
  • Many luxury accommodations and places to choose from
  • Be ready to dish out some MONEY. Mykonos is very expensive
  • Can feel tourist trappy sometimes depending on where you go
